An error crept into our announcement of the new railhead at Thurso. I entered 35,000 lorry miles instead of 350,000. A member reported that on the given figures it meant that the average lorry journey given a payload of 24 tonnes to Thurso and returning empty was 4.4 miles! This 'improved' to 44 which was still obviously wrong. Enquiries with the Freight Facility Grant office at the Scottish Executive elicited a demonstration of how to do the calculation, but it is now obvious that they have mixed 350,000 miles in one year and a tonnage of 189,000 based over several years. A quick calculation shows that 189,000 tonnes in one year is delivered on 21 lorries a day, 365 days a year!
