The Siding We Built In A Week

A new quarter mile railway track in the Scottish Highlands was laid by BR Civil Engineers in one week, and commissioned within three weeks of a meeting to discuss the feasibility of the project.

This development, serving the MK Shand pipe coating plant, Invergordon, Easter Ross, marks a major step forward in British Rail's involvement in service to industry associated with North Sea oil.

Only three weeks after a site meeting to investigate the possibility of building the siding the first section of 450 tons of North Sea pipe line left by train. Other railways services involved with the North Sea oil boom include a special terminal set up at Craiginches, Aberdeen, for cement arriving by train in connection with preparations for the oil business. The small country station of Fearn, north of Invergordon, has just handled 7,250 tons of steel piles for the oil well drilling rig construction yard at Nigg Bay.
