In Making Rail Freight Work for the Highlands (FNE 60), the author wrote that the full dualling of the A9 is budgeted for £3 billion, which it is, but went on to say that the Highland Main Line investment is capped at £600,000. It is actually £600 million. Nonetheless, it's still only one-fifth of that for the road and hardly fits with the First Minister's statement of 5th August, 2008 that "...rail must at least compete with the roads." And, incidentally, the comparable allocated costs of upgrading Aberdeen to Inverness are £3 billion for the A96 and £280 million for the railway.
