Book Review

"Diesels in the Highlands" Andrew Vines,
Midland Counties Publications, Ian Allan Ltd
80 pages, hard back £14.99

This superb book, for me, fills a huge gap in my observing of trains. Up until the early 1960s I considered myself an active observer of the rail scene but it wasn't until my active involvement with FoFNL that I began to be aware of the modern railway scene. This meant that reading the railway magazines left me struggling to appreciate all that had happened in the intervening years.

So, not only does this wonderful book help to complete my knowledge but it evokes fond memories of holidays spent in Scotland travelling through the locations covered by this book.

Unfortunately the Far North Line constitutes the smallest allocation of space but it is a case of "never mind the width - feel the quality". The photograph including Carbisdale Castle is excellent and reminds us that the haulage of fuel tanks has gone full circle.
